In the past week I have attended the British Photography Gala where I was shortlisted in the Documentary category on the Monday. I did not win however it was great taking part. On the Friday I flew to Paris.
Dad's Not the Word. Corporeality Exhibition. Bastille Design Center. 8-10 November 2024
It was my first time at the Photo Fair, but not my first time in Paris. I came five years ago via Eurostar after being invited by The Fifty One Percent at France 24 to talk about my photobook 'Mum's Not the Word. This time around I was invited by curator and award wining photographer Danila Tkachenko to participate in the Art-Icon exhibition at Bastille Design Center, in parrallel with Paris Photo Fair.
Imagine my surprise when I got of the RER train from the airport and arrived in Issy Val de Seine, South Paris to be taken in the wrong direction by Google maps. I found myself walking past France24 TV HQ, this was totally unplanned but also affirming that I was meant to be there. It was in Paris that I made the decision to start shooting Dad's Not the Word. It was a hot summer bank holiday weekend. After the TV interview I went on a riverboat tour on the Seine. Afterwards I wandered about the South side of Paris. I found myself in Musee de Rodin staring at The Thinker. It was then I decided that when shooting the male counterpart of Mum's Not the Word, I would simply positon the male participant the opposite way around. And now here I was in Paris with Dad's Not the Word playing a part in the cultural photo scene amongst the greatest photographers in the world.
